Voids and Singletons

A good 9 card trump fit requires 25 HCP's when both hands are balanced.

If one hand has a void opposite a poor 4 card suit, then 20 HCP's will do.

If opposite hands each have a void, well Christmas has come early.

Board 25 is a great example.

N-S have a good fit in hearts, and North has a poor diamond suit opposite a void.

Souths points in spades are mostly wasted opposite a Norths void.

Essentially a 12 HCP game in hearts.  Who would bid such a game?

The killing lead when voids and singletons abound is of course a trump.

East must lead AH followed by another. This kills Norths plan of crossruffing.

North must not play trumps for the same reason, needing all 4 South trumps to ruff diamonds.

So how did we do?

3 out of 6 pairs got to a heart game, mostly successful, due to QS lead.

Well done to them, not being vulnerable was a great help.

3 pairs stole a spade contract, unfortunately doomed by a 5-0 break.

Easy to double and collect a handsome dividend. Thank you very much.

Out of whack shaped hands make for great competitive bidding and surprising makeable contracts on not so many points.
